The Wren, the wren
The King of the Birds,
St Stephens day she was caught in the furze,
Up with the kettle and down with the pan
Give us a penny to bury the wren.
Here she is for all to see,
Hanging on a holly tree,
A bunch of ribbons by her side,
Cloughjordan boys to be her guide.
The wren boys have holly bushes decorated with ribbon and a wren on the middle of it. In olden days when the porter was cheap the wren boys used to buy half a barrel of porter and they used have a dance in old barn and all the men used go home singing and shouting.
Now the wren boys divide the money amongst themselves and sweets.
