  1. When a farmer, 60 years ago, wanted to till a piece of riasc ground. They cut of the tussocks or turtogs with the spade, put them into heaps, about a horse load in each heap and left them to dry for a few weeks.
    When dry they made a fire of turf under each heap and left the tussocks to burn for weeks until they were in ashes.
    They usually planted turnips or mangolds in this field the first year and covered the turnip seed with the ashes. This ashes acted as manure.
