    “I am a young fellow that ran out my lands and means...”

    The following song was taken down in the year 1922 from Con Cronin, Monaparson, Mourne Abbey, Mallow, by his son, Br. Columban M. Cronin, The Patrician College, Mountrath.

    "I am a young fellow that ran out my lands and means,
    Agus cailleacha an bhaile ná tabharfadh dom bean ná spré
    I placed my affections on one that had gold in store,
    Is do gheallas do'n ainnir go leanfainn di feín go deó.
    We made up our minds with each other for to elope,
    Is go dtabhafainn mo chapall igcoinne mo mhíle stór.
    I met my true-lover about the appointed place,
    Is í tarraing ar Chaiseal ar sodar um maedhon-lae.
    It was then I accosted this juvenile, jovial dame,
    Mo dhiallad dá cnagadh is mo chapall dob' árd a léim,
    We being in a hurry, I asked her to mount the mare,
    Sé dubhairt sí fan socair, táim corrtha go n-ólfad braon.
    When we reached into Cashel, she called for quart of ale
    'Gus coirce do'n gcapall go fairsing is a dóthain féir.
    She opened her purse and pulled out a note to change,
    Is nior fhágamar Caiseal go maidin ar eirighe an lae.
    Twas early next morning we started to meet the train
    Ar eagla an airm 's gur leanfadh an tóir nár ndiaidh.
    In Waterford City we stopped till our clothes we changed,
    Is bhí céad agus dachad de ghiní buidhe ag an mbreith.
    Next day we engaged with the captain to sail away,
    Is do dhíolas mo chapall le sagart ó pharóiste an tSléibhe.
    The ship being steady and the weather being fine and fair,
    Is do shroiseamar talamh gan uireasba, gabhadh ná baoghal.
