The books used in these schools were mostly English.
About the year 1838 the hedge schools were abolished.
There was a hedge school at Lalor's in Parknahown a mile from Cullohill. A man by the name of King used to teach in this school. He was a stranger. He used to stop at Lalor's and Kenny's and Dunphy's. He was paid by the pupils present and got his food. Reading, writing and arithmetic were taught in this school. Irish was spoken by master and pupils. Some Irish was spoken
The pupils used to sit down on forums. There was no blackboard but a green flag by the wall.
When writing upon paper they used to write with a quill instead of a pen.
