- Toys were rare and dear long ago, so the only way the children had of amusing themselves were with homemade toys.
The most common of older boys toys were castle tops. Castle tops were pieces of timber wide on the top and getting more narrow down along. It comes to a point at the bottom.
A piece of long steel was driven through the top of the castle top and out through the pointed end. By means of a chord the castle top was put spinning.
There used be great competition between the castle top manufacturers to see who made the castle top which held the longest. There used be great rivalry between the smiths also for the purpose of seeing who made the best spear.
