- It is not lucky to throw out ashes on New Year’s Day, or to throw out water. It is unlucky for people to go into a house when the people of the house would be churning, and not to take a drass, because they would take the butter away. If a person gives away anything it is said that their luck would go. The people spill blood on St. Martin’s day because St. Martin’s blood was spilt. It is unlucky for people to turn anything with a wheel on it on St. Martin’s day. The people decorate their houses with holly and ivy for Christmas. Crosses are made on St. Bridge’s day and hung up over the picture of the Sacred Heart, in honour of St. Bridget.
