    There was a priest living in Gurteen named Fr. Griffin. He was appointed chaplain in Galway and was living near Salthill. One night in 1920 about mid-night a lorry-load of "Black and tans" came and told them that a man who was dying wanted to see him. He went with them and were near the beach before they killed him. They buried him in the road but a man who was passing saw a piece of his coat sticking up though the road. he was then buried in Loughrea Cathedral
