  1. On a hill overlooking the picturesque little bay known as the Abbey Bay near the historical town of Ballyshannon stands the lichen decked ruins of what was once a famous Cistercian Monastery. In medieval times this hallowed spot represented one of the innumerable seats of learning which abounded in Éire at the time. Here portion of the “Annals of the Four Masters” was written. A strange legend is attached to it. It is strongly believed locally that when the monks heard the drumming of the horses hooves approaching this monastery the Abbot detached the Silver Mass Bell from the tower and threw it into the swamp which faces the monastery. He is supposed to have attached a curse to it that whoever tries to remove it would lose his life. No attempt
