  1. After the famine travelling gangs of gipsies came from England and Scotland and remained in Ireland travelling from place to place in covered wagons. They sold cheap jewellery, foreign-made cheap lace, cheap wicker-work and household goods. Some of them travelled on horses and asses, and the young girls paid them from sixpence upwards to have their fortunes told. Travelling tinkers are gipsies also and they do odd jobs in country houses repairing
