  1. In ancient times the boys and girls did not wear boots or stockings until they were twenty years of age, for they came to (m) mass and market bootless. Some wore stockings with the sole cut off leaving the instep and the toes covered as a kind of substitute for boots, and the young boys and girls would tramp barefooted in all kinds of weather to dances.
