Carrowmore Castle was just west of where Louisburg now stands. In 1574 John of the Sails had command of this castle. Caher na Mart (the Fort of the beeves), where Westport House now is, was another O'Malley castle. In 1574 the Castle on Inishbofin was held by Loughlin, the brother of Grania Uaile, the castle on Clare Island by Cormach O'Malley; Kildavert castle on Achill by Teige Roe O'Malley.
The O'Malleys were always a sea clan, and our chiefs were ex officio admirals of the King of Connaught. At the end of Elizabeth's reign the clan had two long ships that carried 300 men each, and about 30 galleys.
The name O'Malley is in Gaelic o Maille, pronounced o mawl-yeh. The earliest Anglicised form of the name is "OMayl", used in 1318. Grania Uaile used in English the form "O'Mailly".
