1. The Habit of Our Ancestors (ar lean)

   The women wore long gowns and shawls and white frilled bonnets and they used to spend a whole day ironing and smoothing the frills. They had no houses as we have now. Their houses were made of stone or wood. There were strong poles driven into the ground and the spaces between filled with wickerwork. The plastered the walls with clay and whitewashed them on the outside. The fire was made in the middle of the floor and the smoke used to go out through a hole in the roof. There was only one large room in the house and this had to serve as kitchen and bedrooms. The old people never had any of the comforts that we have now but they prospered and were stronger and better able to endure hardships than the people of to-day.
