  1. Bread
Wheat was grown pretty intensively in this district so most of the bread used was made from it. The flour was manufactured in a mill called the "Old Mill" on the road to Derrygoden and about 5 mls. N.W. of Whitegate.
It was owned by the McDermott family who were evicted at the time of the Clanricarde evictions. The mill is now in ruins. At present a mill owned by Patick Minogue, Ballyhinch on the road to Portunina and about 1 1/2 miles from Whitegate grinds the corn for the farmers.
The people do not remember "querns" to be used but they were used years ago as parts of them can still be seen in the district.
The following Kinds of bread were used:- Wheaten bread, Potato-cake, Oatenmeal bread & Buck bread.
Under the heading of "Food in olden times" I have described how the foregoing breads were made but no one could tell me how oatmeal bread was made.
In some [places] houses a significant supply of bread was baked for a week.
