  1. Weather Lore.
Signs of Rain: Dark clouds. Wind from south-west, south or (seldom), west. Smoke descends from chimneys. Soot liquid, and runs down. Inside walls and flagged floors of dwelling-houses, weeping. White mist forms on top of Slievenamon and descends mountain side, eventually obscuring view of the mountain. If this mist ascends and clears off, weather will be fine.
Halo at night round moon and stars, in daytime, "a watery sun". Rainbow at night for good weather, rainbow in the morning, for broken weather.
Sheep and cattle come down to shelter from the hills. If raining, and sheep graze, the rain will continue, if sheep lie, the rain will probably not continue for a good while. Single magpies are met in nesting time. Distant hills and woods appear near. Smaller trout rise, in near bank, with a peculiar, sideways, low, clear leap, showing underside. When there is no "take" fishing, anglers say "There's rain overhead".
