- In olden times on the feast of St. Brigid people used to hang St. Brigid's cross to save the people of the house from any misfortune during the year, and to honour the Saint. St. Brigid's cross was made by placing two pieces of sticks at right angles. Straw was woven around the sticks in order to keep them together.Up to the present day people generally have St. Benedict's medal hung in the stables. People said that he protects cattle from any ailments. Crosses made of straw were also hung in stables for protection. When pilgrims first commenced to go to Knock, they used to break off pieces of cement from the walls of the church, and keep them in the house. If any member of the family got sick those pieces were rubbed on them, and often times cured people. On May day, a pole is dressed up with a dress and flowers. It is called the May Queen. Children
carry it from house to house. They sing certain songs and get pennies.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
