- In the famine times around Mullagh, there were a lot of roads made. When at this work, the men had to work very hard and there was no food to be got to feed them.
The Indian meal had to be used sparingly, so when the men would feel hungry between their scanty meals of Indian stirabout, they would go into a field of turnips and pullone each; these they would slice and eat raw or sometimes they would roast them over the fire on which thy made the porridge. - Collector
