The most common form of constructing houses in rural districts in Ireland up to eighty years ago, was mud-wall composed of yellow or blue clay mind with straw or rushes, cut in short lengths and mixed for some time until it got quite tough. The roofing consisted of cleft bog oak held together with wooden pegs, as iron nails were expensive and had to be made by hand. The roof was then thatched with straw sewed on with straw ropes.
