Ar an leathanach seo

  1. Hiring is a milder form of the old pagan custom of selling slaves. There are two markets in Cavan and all other towns each year. They are held on the fourteenth of May and on the twelfth of November.
Boys and girls from rural districts travel into town and offer their services for six (monts) months at these two markets to farmers and others.
The wages for boys varies from £5 to £26 a half year, according to age, strength and experience, and for girls from £6 to £12.
The boys have to plough, sow, reap, and sometimes help with milking the cows and feeding pigs.
The girls have to do all the housework
