Glendalough in the early times was noted for its great schools and a great many students came from all parts to Saint Kevin's School at Glendalough.
2000 students attended it daily. There is nothing of it left now except a ruin.
The Hostel in Glendalough at present was once a National School it was built in the year 1867, there was a school for boys beside it and up to a hundred children attended it. When the lead mines closed the population of Glendalough fell very much and there was only need for one school, the girls school was used, and the boys school which was built a long time before the girls, fell.
