- (1) Hansel Monday The first Monday of the New Year is called Hansel Monday. On this day you should give away nothing at all and take all you get and you will be receiving throughout all the year. (2) St Patricks Day. On St Patricks Day the men and boys all wear shamrocks in their hats and coats, and women and girls wear harps and green ribbons in honour of St. Patrick. (3) Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday is also called Shraft Tuesday, or Pancake night. On this day pancakes are made and a ring is put in one of them.
