18.2.'38We sow potatoes. We sow about two acres of potatoes every year.
The farmer prepares the ground : he ploughs and harrows it.
The ground is manured before it is turned up.
The potatoes are sown in drills, the drills are made with a plough. Long ago wooden ploughs were used, but there are none left.
The spades are bought in a shop.
The people help each other in sowing the potatoes.
When the potatoes are beginning to come up they are scuffled, and then they are moulded and when they are nearly done growing they are sprayed. The potatoes are dug with a spade when they are new, and then they are dug up with a potato digger.
The farmers and their workmen pick the potatoes from the ground.
There are different kinds of potatoes - Aran Banners Kerr' Pinks Irish Queen's, Presidents and Shamrocks.
The Aran Banners grows best in our distict.
My father told me that potatoes were used instead of starch.Saidee Greene (13)
