    Local Marriage Customs
    Marriages most usually take place during Shrove and on Shrove Tuesday.
    The month of May and Fridays + Saturdays are considered unlucky for marriages.
    Eating pancakes is the only custom I know connected with Shrove Tuesday.
    Matches are made in this disrict. Money is usually given as dowry. Stock and goods are sometimes given as well. £100 is considered a very respectable dowry.
    People do not remember marriages taking place in the houses.
    On wedding day it is customary for bride to wear something old and something new, something borrowed and something blue.
    A wedding breakfast is usually held immediately after the wedding in the bride's home. The bridal party and immediate relatives of both parties attend this.
    "Straw boys" called "Black men" visit the bride's house at night.
    They wear all sorts of dresses, men dress as women. Anything that will disguise them. Men wear their
