  1. At home we have a churn. It is about twenty one inches high. It is about a foot square at the top and at the bottom. The sides are straight. it is about nine years old.
We make butter about twice a week in summer an once a week in winter. My mother and myself do the churning. It takes us about ten minutes to churn. People know when the butter is made when it all sticks together. My mother pours hot water in the churn to help it on. When the butter is stuck my mother takes it out of the churn and works it to take the milk out of it. Then she puts salt in it and the butter is made.
Long ago a woman came into a dairy in Bargy and churned a little and went off without anybody seeing her. When the people of the house came into the dairy they started to churn and they churned away for a long time and no butter came on the milk.
My mother told me this story. She heard it from my Grandmother who is dead.
Butter milk is used for drinking and for baking bread.
