    Catholic man prompted by his employer an English protestant settler, crept noiselessly and stole the Chains of the cannons. Next day the Cannons were pulled by huge ropes made from yarn, but progress was slow ropes breaking now and then. Seeing that it would be impossible to reach Ballinalee or Granard they deposited the Cannons in a lake called Keeldra Lake, and decided to meet the approaching enemy on the Battle field at Ballinamuck. A fierce battle ensued in which the Ballinamuck women came out to help their brothers, husbands, Fathers and sons. The Longford Milita faught with the crown forces.
    Animated by the bravery of the Rebels and thrilled by the heroic fighting of the undaunted Ballinamuck woman and true to the spirit of Longford, Men with the Irish Blood coarshing rapidly in their veins - it must have reached boiling point at Ballinamuck, for changed over to help their own Country men, turning their guns on a section of English soldiers who were pouring shot and shill into heroic woman
