  1. The old houses were thatched and had very tiny windows. The thatch was got from the straw of the wheat and oats. Some of the old houses had a bed in the corner of the kitchen. It was called a "settle bed" and it was used as a seat in the day-time. The chimney was generally in the middle of the house. The front of the chimney was made of mortar and stones. There are no accounts of houses having no glass. The old floors were made of clay. There are half-doors in the district still. Turf and sticks were used for the fire. Rush, and resin-candles were used here about forty years ago and they were made locally.
