  1. Rush candles were very common in this district in olden times. The way they made them was to pull a thick rush and peel it and leave it along the fire to dry. Then they had an instrument called a grisset. The people filled this with greace and put the rush through the greace. Then they had a candlestick with a wooden boss and according as the candle burned it kept coming up.
