Long ago the people used to live in Botháns or small thatched houses. The thing that divided the kitchen from the room was called the "Cloikeens". Other times the people used to put a settle-bed or dresser across the kitchen to divide it from the room and then they would nail up boards or something similar. The chimneys in some houses used to be in the middle of the floor and an iron pipe used to be put through the roof with a bucket on the top. At night they used to light rush candles which they made themselves. They
