The hand staff was made from ash or sally and the buailtin which struck the oats was made from white thorn and both were joined together by a band made from an eel skin. The bent sticks shaped like the letter u were usually made from from yew tree heated and turned was called the caipin or hacain.
The threshers used to work with only their socks on.
