- Folklore Old Schools
In one of the fields of Corken there are the ruins of an old school. The teacher was known by the name of Juggie Dillon. Part of the desk is still to be had in John Mullally's house Corken.
He used to teach every night. Part of the time he had twenty pupils, each of which used to pay one penny per week. He used to teach them the alphabet and how to bless themselves.
The school was a one roomed building. The master had a little corner shut off for living in.
He taught them their names in Irish and how to say "shut the door and open it". That was all the Irish that was taught.
They had a book called "Reedamadaisy" (Reading made easy) It was very simple English like our 1st book.
Told to me by John Mullally (aged 78 yrs, Corken, Rathconrath old age pensioner.
