- The famine lasted from the year 1845 to 1847. It was very bad round this district and hundreds of people died with it. There was a woman and her daughter who lived in Castletown Geoghegan who ate nothing for one week. At the end of the week they died in the house together. Her landlord was a very bad man. When she had the rent paid she had not enough to keep herself and she lived on grass and nettles. It is said that her daugher used to eat leaves and sticks and anything she met growing on the side of the road. The neighbours that lived near the house saw her dying and they had not any food to give them. A man(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
