- In February the fields and gardens are cultivated ready for the potatoes. First the drills are dug then the manure is spread in them. Then the potatoes are dropped one foot apart and the drills are closed. When they have come above ground they are landed to protect them from the frost. Then they are sprayed with bluestone and soda. In October all poatatoes, Kerrs Pinks, shamrocks, Champions, and Kerry Blues, are taken in and pitted. They are left in the pit for some time and then taken in for household purposes.
