    The district in which I live in did not escape the horrors of famine and scores of people were buried daily. Young and old met with the same fate, as in short a thickly populated district became almost deserted. The poor people had no food, save raw turnips and this article of diet had to be stolen from the more fortunate farming people but many of the large farming class were no friends of the poor as they sold their food stuffs at a nice price to merchants who shipped it out of the country leaving the unfortunate to starve and die.
    Everywhere around the district can be seen the ruined walls of once happy homesteads and these ruined walls are monuments to remind us of the Great Famine. My G. father who owned a grinding mill at Milltown Dunleer, used to related how scores of poor people attended the opening of the mill each day in order to receive some meal which was given free in order to save the unfortunate people. About this time John Mitchell advised the people to organise & prevent the shipment of their food stuffs & he also declared that it would to die fighting with arms in their hands.
