The Famine (ar lean)
“Before the Famine the people of Ireland lived mainly on potatoes and the stapll food of the majority of the people was three meals of potatoes...”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)end of the village until the following morning
Many died by the roadside and in one case the suckling babe was found in arms of its dead mother
The country was infested with beggars
The food supplied by local authorities consisted of Indian meal from which porridge and bread were made. This supply was entirely inadequate and those who had any food divided it In one house in Dunsallagh there was a man who had a sack of fine Indian meal. He never refused any person who asked for it for a helping and still his sack of meal lasted longer than when only his own household were using it
In Moyglass outside Mullagh there lived two men named Sexton One of them had not much of this worlds goods but was a generous disposition The other was wealthy but mean the first man had a garden of cabbage and at the time of the Famine he allowed all the poor people to pick a head of cabbage whenever they needed it each day it(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
