  1. In the parish of Kilshanny there is a lake named "Lough Goller". The lake was not always there. It is said that there was a spring well there long ago. The well it was said used cure some disease. It is said that a woman came to wash clothes in the well so as to cure herself of some disease. The the well flowed over and formed a lake. The well is in the middle of the lake yet.
    It is also supposed that a serpent was there and was chained to the bottom of the lake. The serpent used appear every seven years. A man in the townland of Ballyalla, named Michael O'Loughlin saw the serpent. He had a farm near the lake. When he saw him he was going to kill him. The serpent came into the farm. Then Mr. O'Loughlin went home quickly. Some years afterwards six weeks of
