  1. Long ago, it was an old custom for poor beggar women to be at the Church gate on a wedding day where they collected more than a pound if it were a good wedding. It was thought to be unlucky to get married in May. Mondays and Fridays were unlucky for marriage.

    Tuesday for wealth,
    Wednesday the best day of all,
    Thursday for crosses,
    Friday for losses,
    Saturday no day at all.
    It is unlucky for the bride to travel in the bridegroom's
