- I cull the following from a large list of common-place ones.
"Tisn't profitable to lick honey from thorns"
"The high road for an early ridge and the Bog of Allen for a kitchen garden"
A song in which the local landlord, When Going was treated in anything but a complimentary manner, was being sung one day by a young fellow in the district. In passing, the landlord overheard him.
"Where did you hear that song" said he.
"I heard my father sing it" the young fellow answered.
"Let your father take care" said the landlord "or I'll give him the high road for an early ridge and the Bog of Allen for a kitchen garden"
The landlord's threat of course meant eviction
"There's hope from the ocean but none from the grave"(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
