- The first step of the conquerors was to erect a castle in some cases of wood and later always of stone, and this together with the houses that sprang up around it and the parish Church in the vicinity, formed the nucleus of a small town and the head of a manor.
The town of Thurles owes its origins to the Anglo Normans. One of the Adventurers Theobald Walter was granted large territories in Éile, by King John. He succeeded in driving out the native chiefs the O'Fogartys and the O'Carrolls and at his death in 1206 Anglo Norman colonies had been established in Thurles and Nenagh in Norther Eile. Theobald was appointed chief butler in Ireland by the King. His descendents adopted the name Butler as a surname and received the title of Earls of Ormonde in the 14th century.
The colony at Thurles was granted the usual privileges of a Norman Municipality. They got power to select their own councils and magistrates establish their(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
