- Ballinard means the town of the height. The old church has completely disappeared but the old graveyard(called the old Abbey) is still used. North of the graveyard was Ballinard Castle owned by the Fitzgerald's but there is no trace of it now. The last of the Fitzgerald's was mayor of Limerick in 1786. In 1841 area 1441 acres, population 918, houses 143. Only one protestant. Two hedge schools and 98 pupils. The village = population 654. Houses 115. The church was erected in 1836 at a cost of £800.
