A ring is concealed in a barmbrack and a marriage within a year is predicted for the one who has the good fortune to find it in his share.
Another time-honoured custom is that of the beans. Two beans representing some local pair, of marriageable age are placed some distance apart on the hearth. A matrimonial alliance is signified if the beans jump towards one another, but there is no likelihood of a union if they jump away.
In many places, when all retire, the door is left on the latch and the hearth is swept clean for the benefit of any ghostly visitors that return to their former abode on Hallowe'en.
