  1. Many tales are told about Michael Hartnett nicknamed Up-to-Date a native of Ballyea. He was noted as a jumper. Once he jumped a wall of about five feet in height. This wall was situated on a slope and many tried and failed to jump it. Michael Hartnett jumped it against Bill Barret of Ballyea who died about 40 years ago was remarkable as a singer. His favourite song was "My old back-stripper". There were many great storytellers in this district formerly such as Mickie Casey and Patsie Frawley of Duxtown. Patsie was also a good singer.
