- Food In Olden Times.In olden times the people had three meals a day, but some people had only two, because they were not able to afford three. The meals were breakfast, dinner and supper. The breakfast was eaten about 8 o'clock. The dinner about mid-day, and the supper about 9pm. Each meal consisted of potatoes and thick milk. When the times got better, the people ate yellow meal and stampy. The stampy consisted of grated potatoes mixed with a little flour and then baked. Meat was eaten once a week, and that day was generally Sunday. The only days the butter was eaten were the days that the churn was made. Tea was drunk on Christmas Day and on Saint Patrick's Day. At the beginning of Lent the people bought a barrel of salted herrings or ling.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
