After the fair the people used to drink very hard, because porter was only 2 1/2d a pint.
When the animals are sold a red mark made with chalk is put on their back or labels put on their head. Long ago the people used to be drunk and used be fighting and so they did away with small fairs.
The farmer carries their cattle, and sheep, and sells them. When the people sell their cattle a couple of shillings is given for luck money.
At the big fairs a great number of people gather to buy and to sell their animals.
