  2. In olden times the people made their own fires by means of flint and steel. The method of making the fire was by rubbing the flint against the steel, which then made sparks. Every householder kept a cow's horn, which was filled with half burned rags, and were kept very dry so at the least spark of the flint the rags took fire. Some people used spunk, which was made by dripping brown paper into a liquid of salt peter and water. It was then dried. A spark on this from the flint would make fire immediately.
