    the night salving the broken furniture and other classes of fittings which came ashore and also some pigs, cattle and fowl. The fowl were drowned but the pigs and cattle managed to swim ashore. Towards morning all that was left of the ship was a small spar and on it a monkey still remained, but before he could be rescued he fell down exhausted. Owing to their speaking in French none of the natives could get any particulars.

  2. Candle- and Fire-Making

    In olden times the people made their own fires by means of flint and steel. The method of making the fire was by rubbing the flint against the steel, which then made sparks. Every householder kept a cow's horn, which was filled with half burned rags, and were kept very dry so at the least spark of the flint the rags took fire. Some people used spunk, which was made by dripping brown paper into a liquid of salt peter and water. It was then dried. A spark on this from the flint would make fire immediately.
