  1. The wild birds found in our district are, robins, linnets, thrushes, blackbirds, starlings, seagulls, cuckoos, sparrows, and swallows. The robins nest in hedges, the thrushes, in hedges, the blackbirds in hedges, the starling in eaves of houses, the seagulls on walls, and the swallows in eaves of houses. The cuckoo never builds her own nest, she takes other bird's nests until her eggs are hatched. Weather is sometimes judged by birds and people often say, when seagulls come on dry land it is a sign of very bad weather, when the birds fly high it is a sign of good weather, when they fly low, it is a sign of bad.
    Saint Francis was a great friend of the birds.
    He used to feed them always out of his hands, and he used to preach to them, and he called them his little brothers. When Saint Kevin built his church in Glendalough the skylarks made their nests in it. He cursed them and since then a skylark has never been seen there. When Our Lord was in the garden of Gethsemini praying, there was a wren near by watching him, and when the soldiers came to look for him the wren flew in front of them and guided them to where Our Lord was.
