Boots were more a luxury than a necessity to the poorer people of the past generation, and if used at all, were only worn when the people grew to man-hood. They were made locally by shoemakers, and resembled those of the present day. Factory boots, which were cheaper, were also to be got. These had leather uppers, the soles of which were made of gutta percha. This rubber composition tended to melt when placed near a fire.
