    Thousands lay on battle field
    Their lives to claim no more
    The sun was gone down on the hillside
    Where a dying rebel lay.
    His arms were swept, his body left
    And his lifes blood flowed away

    When a passing comrade heard the

    Gently raising his aching head
    From off the cold cold ground
