“On the western side of Glencreagh is a fort on the bank of the river Mealagh.”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)low-lying ground. The old people used say too that there were thirteen forts built in high ground all round this to guard this one where the riches were hidden, though I can only find nine others all in rising ground and in eight of the centre one.
There was something in the story about a cat now guarding the treasure. The cat was supposed to frequent a cliff a short distance away. This cliff is still known as Fail a' chait. This cliff is in our own land where I was born and reared.
There is a mound of earth in our land. The ground all round is black and boggy different soil to that of the mound. About thirty years ago my father removed some flags. He found them close to the surface in the form of a box with the bottom and sides flagged. I believe they were built in rectangular form, and that it measured about eight feet by five feet. There are two other mounds also in a line with the first. The second is nearly a hundred yards from the first and the third about half that distance from the second.
I never heard any stories in the district concerning these mounds. I mention them because of the flags in the one that was opened.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
