- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)hollowed a large hole or socket in which it is supposed a cross was laid into long ago. The only words that I could make out was "Erected by Con Kelly in rememberance of his wife Mabel." This tribe of people must have been of the ruling class because about two miles from this stone stands a mount which the people of the locality call "Kelly's Mount". There is also a monument erected to Denis Kelly one of the clan in Kilroran. Long ago this clan used to own all the territory from Roscommon to Galway. Long ago Ireland was never governed by a Government as it is now but by kings and chiefs. When these kings died certain clans or tribes governed the country until the dead king's son came of age. This is supposed the way this tribe of Kellys came to be so important in this country. This clan was one of the chief tribe of Roscommon as well as the Mac Dermotts and O Connors. Long ago each county had a tribe of people by which they were governed but about two hundred years ago all this was broken and a Government was formed to make a certain code of laws to guide the people.
