  1. About the year 1843 great crops of potatoes grew everywhere in Ireland. So great was the crop that the people did not know what to do with them and they were left to rot out in the fields. Very little rain fell during the next three years so that crops were generally poor. The following year some corn grew but the landlord had to get every third sheaf.
    The eyes used to be cut out of the potatoes with a goose-quill and planted, as the remainder of the potato was needed for food, and anybody found planting whole potatoes would be summoned.
    In 1846 the blight attacked the potatoes, and because of the drought the corn was scarce and had to be given to the landlord in lieu of rent so the Irish people were in a bad state.
