In the townland of Gurteenihir there is a field called Pollatainín, in which a large underground storehouse was built in the time of the Danes. The field, which has never been tilled is undermined with channels and passages, but there is no way of getting down to these 'rooms' now as the entrance has been filled up for years.
Another fort was situated near Meenies bridge, but no trace of that remains. One night, as a man was going home from a neighbouring house, he saw what he thought was a woman carrying a lantern. As he came nearer, she grew bigger and bigger until she reached the tree tops. He ran home in great fright.
There are no wonderful stories told of the Fairy Forts in this district and no importance is attached to those ancient dwelling places.
